Thane: A group of environmentalists and residents from Hiranandani Estate have united to continue oppose the proposed beautification of the historic, 150-year-old Kavesar Lake, situated near Hiranandani Estate on Ghodbunder Road in Thane.

The protest gained momentum on World Environment Day, when hundreds gathered near the lake to voice their objections. Protesters urged the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) to withdraw its decision to implement the beautification project.

Environmentalists stated that the lake supports a rich ecosystem, including rare white lotuses, diverse bird species, butterflies, and a variety of other flora and fauna. They fear that construction under the guise of beautification could cause irreversible harm to the delicate environment.

The TMC recently laid the foundation stone for the beautification project, triggering a strong backlash from residents and environmental advocates who say the development threatens the lake’s natural character.

In response, local citizens have launched a “Save Kavesar Lake” campaign across social media platforms and WhatsApp groups. An online petition opposing the project has already garnered over 4,000 signatures. Banners and posters have also been placed around the neighborhood to raise awareness.

A significant number of youth, senior citizens, and children joined the Environment Day protest. Holding placards and chanting slogans like “Save Kavesar Lake” and “Respect Nature, Stop Concrete,” they rallied for the preservation of the lake’s natural state. We want greenery, not concrete Citizens’ Roar.

Former corporator-Manohar Dumbre told The Free Press Journal that two protests were held — one on Environment Day and another on the following Saturday — both drawing large crowds.

“The wetland spans around 5.6 acres. The beautification plans include an open gym, a temple, and a walking pathway and others. The foundation stone was laid by authorities in May this year,” he said.

“We have demanded that the area be declared a silence zone. A letter has already been submitted to the TMC, but it was ignored. A delegation will also approach the Chief Minister to bring attention to the issue. If the authorities continue to neglect our concerns, we will go on a hunger strike.”

Residents emphasize that Kavesar Lake is not only a 150-year-old water body but also a vital ecological zone. The presence of rare white lotuses and thriving biodiversity makes it a unique natural landmark. For many locals, it serves as a peaceful green retreat for daily walks and recreation.

Protesters are demanding the immediate cancellation of the beautification project. Instead, they are urging authorities to consider environmentally responsible improvements, such as installing dustbins, providing lighting, and ensuring cleanliness all in consultation with the local community.

"Thane is a city of lakes, but now these lakes are under threat. We don’t want to protest. The decision of beautification is wrong." Dhananjay Parasnath Shukla, Kavesar resident.

“If the Municipal Corporation wants to help, they should provide dustbins and cleaning facilities — but don’t tamper with biodiversity in the name of beautification.” —a resident, Hiranandani Estate resident.

The FPJ reached out to the TMC for a reaction, but they declined to comment on it. Commissioner Saurabh Rao did not respond despite several efforts.
