Mumbai: Mumbai woke up to intense showers on Wednesday morning as heavy rains continued to batter the city following an overnight downpour. Several areas, including the CSMT, Ballard Estate and Nariman Point, reported consistent rainfall that led to mild traffic snarls across the city and suburbs.
IMD Issues Yellow Alert
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), more rain is expected throughout the day, with a yellow alert issued for the city. The forecast suggests a generally cloudy sky accompanied by heavy rainfall at isolated locations. The yellow alert indicates a potential weather-related disruption and advises residents to remain cautious.
As per today's meteorological data, the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 32.6°C and a minimum of 26.1°C. Meanwhile, the Colaba observatory logged a high of 31.6°C and a low of 25.6°C. With saturated ground conditions from previous showers and continued rainfall, daily life across several parts of the city has been disrupted.
Powai Lake Overflows Amid Heavy Rains
Among the key developments during this monsoon spell, Powai Lake, the major artificial reservoir under the jurisdiction of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), began overflowing early Wednesday morning. The BMC confirmed the overflow via a post on its official social media handle, sharing visuals of water breaching the lake's edge.
In its post, the civic body stated: “Powai Lake, one of the main artificial lakes managed by the BMC, began overflowing around 6 am today. With a total storage capacity of 545 crore litres (5.45 billion litres), the lake primarily supplies non-potable water for industrial use and services in Aarey Milk Colony.” The statement added that the overflow was triggered by heavy rainfall in the catchment area over the past 48 hours, which pushed the water level to 195.10 feet, its maximum capacity.
The consistent rainfall since the start of the week has placed additional pressure on the city's drainage infrastructure, raising concerns about further waterlogging and disruption if the trend continues. Civic authorities are closely monitoring the situation, urging citizens to avoid flood-prone areas and report any emergencies.
