Mumbai: Earlier this week, the Navi Mumbai police charged a father-son duo of ophthalmologists for reportedly mishandling cataract surgeries on five elderly patients who later experienced vision loss. The patients reportedly acquired eye infections post-procedure, which ultimately resulted in loss of vision.

According to a report from the civil surgeon, the Vashi police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the 87-year-old senior ophthalmologist and his son. According to the police, a 67-year-old man suffering from cataracts visited the hospital, where two ophthalmologists performed his surgery in March.

The complainant noted that in addition to himself, four others who underwent surgeries there since December 2024 also experienced vision loss. The issue was presented to the civil surgeon, whose latest report confirmed the allegations made by the complainant. The report was forwarded to the Vashi police, and a case was filed.

An officer stated that the physicians are charged with performing the surgeries in a reckless, hurried, and careless way. Consequently, five individuals, including a couple over 65, experienced serious eye injuries. The victims were allegedly found to have severe infections resulting from the Pseudomonas virus after the surgeries.

“We are verifying whether doctors can perform surgeries at the age of 87,” stated Sanjay Dhumal, Senior Inspector of Vashi police station according to a report by Indian Express. The senior inspector stated that the police discovered the doctors had failed to renew their licenses with the Maharashtra Medical Council.

The physicians were charged under sections 125(a), 125(b) (acts posing a threat to life or personal safety of others) and 3(5) (shared intent) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with stipulations of the National Medical Commission Act.
