Mumbai: Mumbai's busy Metro-1 corridor, which connects Ghatkopar to Versova, faced major delays on Monday morning following a technical glitch that disrupted regular operations. The disruption, which came during peak office hours, left several commuters stranded and caused widespread inconvenience, especially to those travelling towards corporate hubs in Andheri, Marol and Saki Naka.

According to social media posts by affected passengers, the issue originated near Azad Nagar Metro Station, where a plastic sheet from a nearby construction site got entangled in the overhead electrical wires due to heavy winds. This unexpected obstruction triggered a disruption in train services, especially for trains heading in the Versova direction from Ghatkopar.

Commuters Irked Due To Service Disruption

Several passengers took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to report the delay and vent their frustration, posting photos and updates from crowded platforms and halted trains. Many commuters highlighted that trains were either severely delayed or moving at a sluggish pace, adding to the chaos of an already busy Monday morning.

Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL), which operates the Metro-1 line, confirmed the incident and cited strong winds as the cause of the disruption. “Train movement was impacted due to a plastic sheet falling on the overhead wires. Our teams acted swiftly to remove the obstruction and restore service,” said an official statement.

The Ghatkopar-Versova corridor, spanning about 11.4 km, is Mumbai’s busiest metro route, ferrying over 4 lakh passengers daily. It serves as a critical lifeline for office-goers, students and daily commuters. With Monday already being a high-traffic day, the disruption led to long queues and overcrowded stations.

Metro authorities have assured that further inspections will be carried out along the stretch to ensure there are no additional risks from surrounding construction sites, especially during the monsoon season when strong winds are frequent.
