Heavy rainfall in Mumbai affected the operations at the city’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Monday. With low visibility and strong winds, the airport recorded an average delay of one hour in flight operations.

The heavy downpour in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region that started in the late hours of Sunday, continued throughout Monday, proving to be a tough day for the city airport, which is one of the busiest airports in the country. The adverse weather condition forced multiple flight delays and diversions to other cities.

According to flight tracker Flightradar24, CSMIA saw an average delay of 62 minutes for the flights departing from the airport and 55 minutes for the flights arriving from other cities. The airport disruption index was valued 5.0 and 4.6 for departures and arrivals respectively, signifying major problems with long delays and several cancelled flights.

All the major airlines issued travel advisories for their passengers informing them about potential delays, cancellations and diversions due to the unfavourable weather. IndiGo, which has the highest number of operations from CSMIA informed the travellers that waterlogging and low visibility were reported on some routes to the airport due to heavy rainfall across Mumbai. “Our teams are closely monitoring the situation and are available to assist you at all times. We appreciate your patience and are here to help throughout your journey,” said the airline.

Air India also issued a travel advisory informing that heavy rainfall might impact flight operations to and from Mumbai and asked the passengers to check their flights’ status. Akasa Air, in its advisory requested the travellers to plan for additional travel time to reach the airport well in time. SpiceJet announced that heavy rains had affected all departures and arrivals as well as their consequential flights.
