Maharashtra: In a bizarre attempt to gain attention on social media, a youth from Boradi village in Shirpur taluka, Dhule district, was taken into custody by the Forest Department for celebrating the birthday of a snake and sharing the video online.
The incident came to light after the youth, identified as Raj Sahebrao Wagh, uploaded a video on Instagram showing him celebrating the snake’s birthday by feeding it cake on the occasion of Nag Panchami, which fell on July 29, 2025, as reported by ABP Majha.
As soon as the video went viral, the Forest Department initiated swift action. Officers from Shirpur Forest Division, along with staff from the Sangvi and Boradi Range, detained Wagh. During the raid at his residence, officials seized two plastic jars (used for snake handling) and his mobile phone.
According to the investigation, Wagh had caught the snake near Budki village in Shirpur taluka. He confessed to celebrating the snake’s birthday and later releasing it in a forested area the same night. Authorities have registered a case under Sections 9 and 51(1) of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, which prohibits the possession and handling of protected species without permission, as reported.
