Since its inception, Patanjali has been making progress in terms of healthy living. To ensure this work continues and gets better, research is needed. Thus, the Patanjali Research Foundation was established to conduct innovative research on Ayurvedic medicines to treat diseases.
While the institute has a varied research collection and considerable research, the main work is around the herbal R&D area. What the institute focuses on is studying the effectiveness of herbal and natural creations in the medicinal and protective aspects of defeating diseases.
Start and mission
Patanjali Research Foundation began in 2017 as a non-profit research institute in Haridwar, India. It is all about Ayurveda meeting science and giving a new perspective to a healthy future. The institute wants to use ancient Ayurvedic knowledge, combine it with modern technology, and give Ayurvedic healing to the world in a language they know. The Patanjali Garden, filled with 1,000 and more known and rare medicinal plants, is nearby.
The institute’s mission is simple: taking the ancient Ayurvedic knowledge from Vedas and great saints to the world. The institute is all into getting into Ayurvedic medicine with supportive evidence and combining it with innovation to provide medicines. They want to make India the centre and launch pad for Ayurveda's growth for the world to follow. They want Ayurvedic medicines and herbs to get global recognition as being scientific and reliable.
Their vision is to become the epicentre of global research in traditional Indian medicine. They want to develop R&D backed by evidence-based research in Ayurveda for medicine. They want to do innovative research solutions for all the medicines brought out.
Their undertakings
Under the Patanjali Research Foundation, there are several branches to come together to keep Ayurveda ahead for healing. There is the Drug Discovery and Development Division that has been inaugurated by India’s esteemed PM Shri Narendra Modi.
This advanced research facility wants to produce uniquely innovative Ayurveda-based products. These are medicine-based with classical and patent formats and research-based as per formula and use. They are backed by the foundation’s Clinical Research Division.
Their Herbal Research Division under Acharya Balkrishna extensively documents and researches medicinal plants and herbs needed for varied medicinal purposes, botanical sciences and agricultural methods. They produce books on plants and herbs and research their use for modern science.
The institute studies Sanskrit and ancient manuscripts to understand Ayurveda and its benefits. The Patanjali University undertaking, Ancient Handwritten Ayurvedic Manuscripts Publication Project, focuses on translating Sanskrit manuscripts into Hindi.
The breakthroughs
1. The foundation has written 111 volumes of the World Herbal Encyclopedia with information on 50, 000+ medicinal plants, their medicinal properties and use and geographical distribution.
2. In their research to fight tuberculosis, the foundation recognised Solanum Virginianum as an important herb that can be used.
3. The foundation found anti-cancer properties in Kolhu-extracted Mustard seeds called Aurantiamide Acetate.
