Raja Parb 2025: Everything You Need To Know About Significance Of Odisha's Vibrant Festival

Raja Parb is also known as Raja Sankrantil. It is a unique and vibrant festival celebrated in the Indian state of Odisha, dedicated to honoring womanhood and fertility, especially linked with the Earth’s menstrual cycle. In 2025, Raja Parba will be celebrated from June 14 to June 16, with each day having its own significance and rituals.

The word Raja is derived from the Sanskrit word Rajaswala, meaning a menstruating woman. The festival celebrates Mother Earth’s menstruation, believed to occur during these three days, it smybolise fertility and regeneration. Women, particularly young girls, are the focus of the celebration, as they are seen as embodiments of feminine power and creativity.

Celebration

The first day is known as Pahili Raja, the second day is the main Raja Sankranti, and the third day is Basi Raja. A fourth day, known as Vasumati Snana, involves bathing the grinding stone (symbol of Bhumi Devi) with turmeric and flowers. During these days, women refrain from household work, wear new clothes, apply alta (red dye) on their feet, enjoy swings, and indulge in traditional games and delicacies like poda pitha, a special rice cake.

Significance

The festival carries deep cultural and agricultural significance. It marks the beginning of the monsoon and the preparation for the sowing season. As a symbolic gesture of respect to Mother Earth, no agricultural activity is performed during Raja Parba.
