Badnawar (Madhya Pradesh): A committee formed by collector Priyank Mishra to investigate the illegal health check-up camp organised at the Badnawar sub-jail is expected to start its probe soon.

The incident has shaken up the entire jail department whose officials are having a tough time explaining their conduct.

On June 6, a so-called private doctor without a proper medical degree organised a health camp inside the jail on his birthday. The doctor, claiming to have a Bachelor of Electro Homoeopathy degree, conducted health check-ups of prisoners with help of unqualified staff posing as doctors and nurses. Officials said no such medical degree exists in medical science.

Only government-appointed MBBS doctors are authorised to examine prisoners in jail. Dr Gopal MBBS, the official jail doctor, was attending training in Bhopal during this time and did not know the unauthorised camp.

SDM Deepak Chauhan issued letters to the jailer and CBMO for allowing the camp without permission. However, deputy jailer Manoj Kumar Mishra claimed he had the authority to permit NGO camps but could not explain why unqualified persons were allowed to practice medicine.

District Jail superintendent RR Dangi stated he learned about the incident only through media reports. CBMO Dr SL Mujalda confirmed receiving the SDM's letter and providing a written response.

Collector Mishra acknowledged forming a high-level investigation committee and said the matter of delay in investigation had not yet come to his notice officially.
