Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Madhya Pradesh West Zone Electricity Distribution Company is making rapid strides in modernising the region’s power infrastructure by installing state-of-the-art smart meters free of cost for consumers. So far, 12.30 lakh smart meters have been installed across the Malwa-Nimar region, with Indore city alone achieving 65% completion of its smart metering target.

According to company officials, the smart metering initiative is aimed at ensuring greater transparency, billing accuracy, and enhanced consumer convenience. These advanced meters also assist in calculating power factor discounts and time-of-day (TOD) based benefits, particularly during solar energy usage periods.

Managing Director of the West Zone Electricity Distribution Company, Anoop Kumar Singh, stated that urban areas in all 15 districts under the company's jurisdiction—including Indore, Ujjain, Ratlam, Dewas, and Khandwa—are witnessing a rapid rollout of the project.

Some urban bodies, such as Mhow, Jhabua, Khargone and Thandla, have already achieved 100% smart meter coverage. In terms of volume, Indore leads the rollout with 5.20 lakh meters installed, followed by Ujjain (1.25 lakh), Ratlam (1.13 lakh), Dewas (63,000), Indore rural circle (61,000), Khandwa (60,000), and Khargone (51,000). Other districts have reported installation figures ranging between 8,000 and 46,000.

Singh emphasised that efforts are being intensified to ensure complete smart metering coverage in all urban areas. Weekly reviews are being conducted to monitor progress and ensure timely implementation. Additionally, smart meters are also being installed on transformers and grids, further bolstering the efficiency and monitoring capabilities of the power supply system.
