New Delhi: The Patiala House Court on Friday extended the judicial custody of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana till July 9. Rana, a key conspirator in the 2008 terror strikes, appeared before the court via video conferencing.

During the hearing, Rana’s counsel raised concerns over his health condition. Taking note of the issue, the court directed the Tihar jail authorities to file a detailed status report by June 9 regarding his medical status and overall condition.

Rana, who was extradited from the United States in May to face trial in India, had earlier approached the Special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court seeking permission to speak with his family members over the phone. His plea was filed on May 27. Rana argued that his communication with his family was important for their peace of mind and to address concerns about his well-being.

This is not the first time Rana has made such a request. On April 24, a similar application was rejected by Special Judge Chander Jit Singh, following strong opposition from the NIA. The agency argued that allowing such communication could compromise the investigation, as Rana might attempt to pass on sensitive or crucial information.

Rana, a former officer in the Pakistan Army’s Medical Corps, is accused of helping co-conspirator David Coleman Headley scout potential targets for the 2008 Mumbai attacks, in which 166 people were killed and over 300 injured. He allegedly provided logistical support and passed on maps, coordinates, and handwritten notes that helped plan the deadly operation.

Rana Interrogated By Mumbai Police

On May 3, the NIA collected Rana’s voice and handwriting samples in the presence of the court to verify their match with recordings and documents linked to Headley. Rana was then sent to judicial custody on May 9 after a round of intense interrogation by NIA officials. He was also questioned by officers from the Mumbai Police as part of the ongoing investigation.
