Political uncertainty has gripped Manipur after BJP leader Thokchom Radheshyam Singh met Governor Anusuiya Uikey on Wednesday, claiming the support of 44 MLAs to form a new government in the state, as per reports. The development comes amid heightened speculation about a possible realignment of power in the 60-member Assembly, which currently has 59 MLAs following the demise of one legislator.
Accompanied by nine other lawmakers, Radheshyam Singh asserted that the BJP-led alliance commands a majority with the backing of 32 Meitei MLAs, three Manipuri Muslim legislators, and nine Naga representatives. "The people’s mandate is clear, and 44 MLAs are ready to support a new government. We have informed the Governor and discussed possible solutions to the current situation," he told reporters.
When questioned whether the BJP would formally stake claim, Singh said the final decision rests with the party’s central leadership. The Governor’s office has acknowledged the submission, with sources indicating that constitutional processes are underway.
The Congress, with five Meitei MLAs, remains the principal opposition, while the remaining 10 seats are held by Kuki legislators—seven of whom were originally elected on BJP tickets. Two belong to the Kuki People’s Alliance, and one is an Independent.
It is being said that BJP’s move aims to consolidate its position amid factional strains within the ruling coalition. The state has witnessed prolonged ethnic tensions between Meitei and Kuki communities, complicating governance.
As Manipur awaits the Governor’s next steps, all eyes are on New Delhi for signals on whether the BJP will push for fresh leadership or seek stability under the current dispensation.
