Guwahati: Amid intensifying flood conditions across Assam, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured the state of comprehensive support to manage the unfolding crisis. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media on Sunday to confirm that Shah had called him personally to assess the situation and pledged all necessary assistance from the central government.

“Hon’ble Home Minister Shri @AmitShah Ji called me a short while ago to inquire about the floods in Assam and has offered all possible assistance to deal with the ongoing situation. I have briefed him on the measures being taken, and we are grateful for his concern and support,” Sarma posted on X.

Assam has been reeling under the impact of continuous downpours that have triggered extensive flooding and landslides across the state. The Brahmaputra River crossed the danger level in Dibrugarh on June 1, marking a critical point in the ongoing deluge.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), at least eight people have lost their lives—three due to drowning and five due to landslides. The fatalities have been reported from the districts of Golaghat, Lakhimpur, and Kamrup (Metro), including a child in Golaghat. Kamrup alone has witnessed multiple landslide-related deaths.

So far, the floods have impacted over 58,000 individuals across 12 districts, with 175 villages inundated in regions such as Dhemaji, South Salmara, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, and Karbi Anglong. Relief efforts are underway, with more than 7,000 displaced people currently taking shelter in 16 relief camps and distribution points established by local authorities.

The agricultural sector has also taken a hit, with an estimated 791 hectares of farmland submerged under floodwaters. Livestock losses are also mounting—around 76,000 animals have been affected, and at least 194 have been swept away.

Infrastructure damage is widespread. Authorities have reported destruction or impairment of 22 roads, one bridge, and several embankments and irrigation canals. Numerous schools and Anganwadi centres have also sustained damage, disrupting services in flood-hit areas.

Urban flooding has compounded the crisis, particularly in Guwahati and its surrounding regions, where nearly 10,000 residents have been affected. Rescue and relief operations are being carried out by combined teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local fire services, and district administrations.

In Manipur :

Torrential rain has triggered widespread flooding and landslides in Manipur, leaving 3,802 people affected and damaging 883 homes over the past 48 hours, officials said on Sunday. Imphal East district has borne the brunt of the crisis, with large parts of the state capital and nearby areas submerged.

Overflowing rivers, including the Imphal and Iril, breached embankments in several areas such as Khurai, Heingang, and Checkon. “At least 3,802 people have been affected and 883 houses damaged in the last 48 hours as a result of floods and landslides in the state,” a state official reported.

The Indian Army and Assam Rifles carried out rescue operations, evacuating nearly 800 people from flood-hit zones. Twelve landslides were recorded across the state, while two people were injured and 64 animals died due to the extreme weather.

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, joined by Chief Secretary PK Singh and other senior officials, visited the worst-hit areas, including Kangla Nongpok Thong, Lairikyengbam Leikai, and Singjamei Bridge. The Raj Bhavan confirmed that the governor instructed officials to keep a close watch on river levels and take immediate preventive action.

In Sikkim:

Torrential rains have brought North Sikkim to a standstill, leaving 1,276 domestic tourists and two foreign nationals stranded in the remote regions of Lachen and Lachung, Mangan district. The relentless downpour has triggered landslides, caused extensive infrastructure damage, and led to a dangerous surge in the Teesta River, severely hampering rescue and evacuation operations.

700–800 tourists may be stranded in higher altitudes of North Sikkim, while highlighting the tragedy of an accident in Munshithang, where eight individuals remain missing. Rescue efforts in the area have been stalled due to the swollen river.

In Tripura:

The Tripura government has opened 60 relief camps, sheltering around 10,800 inmates from 2,800 families, after floods hit the state due to incessant rainfall.

Tripura Revenue Secretary Brijesh Pandey said, “In light of the prevailing and forecasted weather conditions, a Red Alert has been issued to all districts, indicating a high likelihood of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in some places for today and tomorrow. The Honourable Chief Minister is regularly reviewing the situation. The Revenue Secretary is in touch with all the District Magistrates (DMs), who have taken all possible preparatory measures to tackle any situation,” he said.

He added that in the last 24 hours, Agartala received 140 mm of rainfall, while Kailashahar in Unakoti district recorded 192.2 mm.

The official further informed that a total of 14 rescue teams have been deployed at various locations in West Tripura and Unakoti districts.

In West Tripura, 11 rescue teams have been deployed.

A total of 60 relief camps—48 in West Tripura, 3 in Khowai, 3 in Unakoti, and 6 in North Tripura—have been opened across the affected districts, sheltering around 2,800 families and approximately 10,600 inmates.

Brijesh said that, according to preliminary reports, a total of 201 houses were damaged, including 92 houses severely and 109 houses partly, primarily in Gomati, Khowai, Sepahijala, and North Tripura districts. A detailed damage assessment is underway.
