What started as a reluctant choice to fulfil a college criterion for Zhu Jingjing has now turned into a prominent career. Based in China, journalist Zhu Jingjing, who goes by the more popular moniker Meera, has gained traction online for her fluent Hindi-speaking skills.

Meera, who spoke to Connected to India’s Himanshu Verma recently during a virtual interview, shared how she became fond of the language that is spoken by an estimated 609 million people in the world.

Meera, an employee at China Media Group’s Hindi service, quite unsurprisingly spoke in ‘shudh’ Hindi during the course of the interview, flaunting her command over the language, which is gaining popularity in her home country.

She said she chose Hindi as a subject as her college required her to take up a foreign language. With Hindi’s relative low spread in China then, Meera was able to realise the potential of the language in the coming years.

After a stint in her company, she received a scholarship and enrolled at the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University in India for a post graduate degree in Hindi.

The scribe also showcased her fine singing skills by effortlessly humming Bollywood songs from Krrish, a film starring her favourite Indian hero, Hrithik Roshan.
