Morena (Madhya Pradesh): A 27-year-old woman was brutally assaulted by her in-laws for dowry in Madhya Pradesh's Morena. The accused husband and his family members beat the woman with rods, belts, and sticks and pushed her into a well.

The incident happened on Makar Sankranti-- January 14.

The victim has been identified as Anju Sharma. She was brutally beaten with rods, belts, and sticks over dowry demands. The accused beat her till the extent that she fell unconscious on the ground. The in-laws assumed that she had died. They threw her into a 50-feet-deep well and told her family that she had run away.

Motor pump, villagers come as a boon

The woman remained unconscious in the dark well for 12 hours. The next morning, villagers turned on a motor to pump out water from the well.

The vibrations from the pump helped woman gain consciousness. She started crying and screaming, and the villagers, hearing her cries, gathered around the well and pulled her out using a rope.

Anju’s family filed a complaint against her in-laws, accusing them of assault and dowry harassment. They also raised concerns about the police's delayed response in the case.

The incident occurred on the night of January 14, in Rahu village, Subalgadh.

Anju tells the whole story

Anju, 27, shared her painful story with the media after being admitted to the hospital.

She revealed that she married Kuldeep Sharma, a resident of Rahu village, on February 18, 2021. They have a 6-month-old son. Soon after the marriage, her in-laws began demanding dowry.

Her husband, Kuldeep, would often come to the village from Gwalior, where he runs a coaching center, and would beat her for not providing the dowry they wanted, including a car and a gold chain.

Anju explained that despite the abuse, she stayed quiet, hoping things would improve and that her husband would eventually love her. But things only got worse.

Her husband returned from Gwalior and began demanding dowry again. When she requested him to speak to her father over the phone, he angrily grabbed a metal rod and began beating her on her back and limbs.

Her brother-in-law joined in, beating her with a belt, while her mother-in-law hit her with a stick. After being beaten by all three, Anju lost consciousness.

She woke up the next morning in the well, feeling cold and weak. She spent the entire night in the well, with her hands and feet starting to get numb due to prolonged exposure.

Anju's family has demanded justice and filed a report against her in-laws. They are also criticizing the police for their delayed action in the case.
