Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh): The Madhya Pradesh government, during the hearing on Thursday, has informed the High Court (HC) that the toxic waste from the Union Carbide plant will be incinerated within 72 days. The government submitted the status report in court, stating that the first trial run of waste disposal was successful.

According to the state government, the toxic waste is being incinerated at a rate of 270 kg per hour, and at this speed, the entire hazardous waste can be disposed within the given timeframe. The HC has ordered the state government to complete the disposal process within 72 days and submit a report on compliance.

The next hearing on the matter has been scheduled for June 30, 2025.

Furthermore, the court also directed that all environmental and safety regulations be strictly followed while disposing of the toxic waste. The process will be carried out under the supervision of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB) to ensure proper adherence to environmental norms.

Addressing objections raised by petitioners from Pithampur, the HC emphasized the urgency of resolving the 40-year-old toxic waste issue. The court advised the objecting parties to submit their suggestions to the state government, which should consider them if necessary.

Notably, Bhopal Gas Tragedy relief and rehabilitation department transferred 350 MT chemical waste to Pithampur for incineration on January 1 this year in compliance of HC order dated December 3, 2024.
