India captain Shubman Gill has been in rollicking form in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy so far and former India skipper Dilip Vengsarkar has reserved high praise for him. Talking on the sidelines of the Mumbai Cricket Association's (MCA) season-opening event, Vengsarkar was effusive in his plaudits for the 25-year-old Punjab batter.
"He did very well as a captain and as a batsman. See it is very important that he scored runs and led from the front. He has done that and is an experienced player and a world class batsman. In English conditions, everyone was thinking what would happen to the Indian team because of the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. But these young players have shown that they are capable of doing it. And I'm very proud of them," he added.
When Vengsarkar was asked if he sees any changes in Gill's batting in Test cricket with him scoring 585 runs in the two Test matches played so far in Leeds and Birmingham and if he can break Sir Don Bradman's record of 974 runs in a single Test series, the India great was non-committal but hopeful.
"Well, he is in great form and he is an outstanding batsman. I hope he does that although I don't know he will do it. It is definitely an opportunity. What is important is to make an impact and not personal milestones. I feel we are obsessed with personal milestones.
