Uttarakhand News: 24 Children Lost In Jungle During Neelkanth Temple Trek, Successfully Rescued After Overnight Operation

Rishikesh: A group of 24 children visiting the famous Neelkanth Mahadev Temple near Rishikesh went missing in the dense jungles of Rajaji National Park late Saturday evening, prompting a massive overnight search and rescue operation by local police and forest department teams9.
According to officials, the children—reportedly from a single group on a trekking and pilgrimage trip—lost their way on the return journey from Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, situated deep in the hills and forests surrounding Rishikesh. The incident unfolded amidst inclement weather and poor visibility, with heavy rainfall adding further challenges to rescue efforts.
Upon receiving information of the missing group, both the Laxman Jhula police and Rajaji Tiger Reserve staff quickly mobilized. Search teams combed the forested paths throughout the night, braving the harsh weather and darkness to locate the children. After several tense hours, all children were found safe and sound, and were escorted back to safety.
A forest department member added: “The jungle trails are tricky, and the weather made rescue even more challenging. Our priority was the safety of the children. We combed the forest all night, calling out and using torches until we found them together early morning.”

He further said: “We request all visitors to the Neelkanth area to always trek in groups, take local guides, and avoid unknown paths, especially during the monsoon. Safety protocols must be strictly followed to prevent such incidents.”
Authorities used this incident to reinforce the importance of adhering to safety protocols when trekking in Uttarakhand's hilly terrain, especially during the monsoon season. "Fortunately, due to the swift action of the rescue teams, a major mishap was averted," a local police official noted. The children’s families expressed immense relief following the successful conclusion of the search.
Families of the children expressed immense gratitude to the rescue teams. One parent shared: “We thank the police and forest officials from the bottom of our hearts. Their timely efforts ensured the safe return of our children. Without them, the outcome could have been very different.”
