Washington: US President Donald Trump has sent a letter to Iran, expressing his desire to negotiate a nuclear deal, as per a report by Reuters. The letter, which appeared to be addressed to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was mentioned by Trump during an interview with Fox Business Network that aired on Friday, March 7.
"I said I hope you're going to negotiate, because it's going to be a lot better for Iran," Trump said during the interview.
Tensions between Washington and Tehran have remained high following the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear agreement and the reimposition of tough economic sanctions on Iran. Trump has repeatedly called for a new, more comprehensive deal that addresses Iran’s nuclear program as well as its missile development and regional activities.
In the interview, Trump also warned of consequences if Iran refuses to negotiate. "I think they want to get that letter. The other alternative is we have to do something, because you can't let another nuclear weapon," he said.
Meanwhile, diplomatic discussions are underway on the international front. On Friday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov met with Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, to discuss ongoing efforts to address Iran’s nuclear program, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
The developments come at a critical time as global powers seek to prevent further escalation in the region.
