Shooting At Emory University's Atlanta Campus
A shooting took place near the adjoining campuses of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Emory University on Friday. No civilians are believed to have been injured, but several rounds hit buildings on the CDC’s sprawling campus, said Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum.
"It sounded like fireworks going off, one right after the other," said Brandy Giraldo, the chief operating officer of The General Muir restaurant.
A police officer who was critically injured during the shooting was taken to hospital but later succumbed to their injuries. The gunman was found dead on the second floor of a building across the street from the CDC.
The shooter was armed with a long gun, and authorities recovered three other firearms from the scene. Authorities said there is no longer any threat to the public.
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr said "we're horrified by the news out of Emory University and praying for the safety of the entire campus community."
