Famous author Salman Rushdie's attacker, 27-year-old Hadi Matar, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for stabbing the author and leaving him blind in one eye," according to reports.
A New York court convicted Hadi Matar of attempted murder in February this year. Rushdie was attacked at the Chautauqua Institution event in New York in 2022, before his scheduled speech.
According to reports, the septuagenarian author refrained from attending the sentencing; however, he submitted a written victim impact statement. Rushdie was the main witness in the assault case against him.
In his account, he recalled facing what he believed would be his death as an assailant inflicted over twelve stab wounds to his head and body.
The court imposed the maximum 25-year prison term on Matar for attempting to murder Rushdie. Additionally, he received a seven-year sentence for injuring another individual who was present on stage during the attack. However, Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt informed the court that these sentences would be served concurrently.
