Root remains unbeaten on 99 as England Reach 251/4 on Day 1

Joe Root stood tall on Day 1 of the third Test at Lord’s, finishing unbeaten on 99 as England closed on a strong 251/4. After winning the toss, England captain Ben Stokes chose to bat first on a dry, batting-friendly surface under clear skies.

India’s pacers bowled with discipline early on, keeping the pressure tight. The breakthrough came via Nitish Kumar Reddy, who struck twice in a single over to remove both openers Ben Duckett (23) and Zak Crawley (18) and swing the momentum India’s way.

England recovered well through a composed 109-run partnership between Root and Ollie Pope. The duo countered India’s bowling with patience, guiding the hosts to safety by Tea. But the session ended quickly for Pope, who edged a sharp turner from Ravindra Jadeja to wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel for 44.

India then made another quick dent, with Jasprit Bumrah removing Harry Brook for 11. However, Root found solid support in Stokes, and the pair adopted a cautious approach to avoid further damage.

Root’s near-century was laced with class and resilience, though late drama ensued as he was left stranded on 99 after Stokes denied a second run in the final over. England, however, ended the day firmly in control.
