The first Test between England and India at Headingley, Leeds, began with England winning the toss and choosing to field first under clear skies. However, the decision did not go as planned for the hosts, as India ended Day 1 in a commanding position, posting 359/3 in 85 overs.
India got off to a steady start, with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal leading the way. The young left-hander played with confidence and patience, reaching a well-deserved century (101 off 158 balls), including 16 fours and a six. His innings set the tone for the day, and he built a strong partnership with captain Shubman Gill.

Gill continued the momentum and remained unbeaten at stumps with a superb 127 off 175 deliveries, laced with 16 boundaries and a six. The Indian skipper batted with class and composure, anchoring the innings after Jaiswal’s dismissal.
Rishabh Pant joins the party to dominate England bowlers
Vice-captain Rishabh Pant joined Gill in the middle and played a steady yet aggressive knock. He is not out on 65 off 102 balls, smashing 6 fours and 2 sixes, and adding to India’s strong total. The pair’s unbeaten partnership frustrated the English bowlers as the day wore on.
For England, captain Ben Stokes was the most effective bowler, picking up 2 wickets for 43 runs in 13 overs. Despite his efforts, England’s bowlers struggled to make breakthroughs, and India took full advantage of the batting-friendly conditions.
As the day ended, India looked in full control, setting up a strong platform to build a big first-innings total. With two set batters at the crease and wickets in hand, the visitors will aim to push further ahead on Day 2.
