An Instagram influencer from Pune, Nupur Pittie, on Wednesday shared a video titled "Urine Eye Wash" and caused a stir on social media.
In the video, Pittie explained how she uses her urine as a natural eye rinse. Describing the process, she said she collects her first urine of the morning in two cups. She places her eyes over the cups and starts blinking. She said she moves her eyes as much as possible - side to side, up and down - allowing the urine to enter the eyes from all sides. She then taps the eyes lightly and gently places her hands over her eyes for a couple of minutes, allowing the warmth of her hands to transfer to the eyelids.
She said the practice is part of her medicine-free lifestyle and claimed it helps with redness, dryness and irritation.
Meanwhile, the video received severe backlash. Dr Cyriac Abby Philips (TheLiverDoc) shared the video on X (formerly Twitter) and warned people not to put urine inside their eyes, as it is not sterile. "Please don't put your urine inside your eyes. Urine is not sterile. Boomer aunties trying to be cool on Instagram is depressing... and terrifying," he wrote. He also commented on her Instagram post, saying, "You need help, woman. This is not normal. If you are trying to ride the social media ‘following and like wave’, this is not the way. Get help."
A user commented, "Why does every natural healing tutorial start with either cow dung or urine?" Another wrote, "Hilariously stupid. There’s a reason why urine is excreted by the human body. These idiots want to put it back in. They are taking gullible people for a dangerous ride."
