Thane: After three days of extensive search operations for the undertrial accused who escaped from the Bhiwandi court premises, the Thane police have failed to trace him. The police have appealed to the public to contact them if they know about the accused and will reward Rs 10,000. The police officials said that they have circulated his photograph across Indian railway stations and public transport buses offices in Maharashtra.
Accused Was Charged in 2023 Rape and Murder of Six-Year-Old Girl
The accused, Salamat Ali Ansari, an undertrial charged with the rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in Bhiwandi in 2023, escaped from police escort custody on Monday. He fled while being escorted by a Thane police team after a court appearance in Bhiwandi. Despite an intensive manhunt, he remained untraceable as of Wednesday evening.

Senior Police Inspector Vinayak Gaikwad told the FPJ that we have shared a photo of the accused with the police, as well as other states. Additionally, we have emailed the Indian Railways about the escaped accused and public transport services in Maharashtra.

Police Admit Escort Team Lapse; Disciplinary Action Likely
There was significant negligence by the escort team, which included six police personnel and one police van driver. Thane police will take disciplinary action against them.
According to police sources, Ansari was lodged at Thane Central Jail and brought to Bhiwandi court for a scheduled hearing on Monday (August 4). He arrived at the court premises at 11 AM and was produced before the sessions court around 1 PM.
Accused Vanished While Being Taken Back to Van Post-Court Hearing
After his appearance, he was escorted back toward the police van when he managed to escape from the court premises, still under police watch. Despite an immediate chase, the team failed to apprehend him.
