The Wagale Estate Police have arrested a youth, while two of his companions remain absconding, in connection with the alleged murder of a 20-year-old man and the assault on his brother, following a dispute that began over a cricket match in Thane on Monday.
The incident occurred near the Sathewadi temple, close to Gyansadhana College in Wagle Estate, Thane, on Monday evening. The deceased has been identified as Shivam Karotiya (20), who lived with his parents and two younger brothers in the Sathwadi area of Wagle Estate.
The arrested accused has been identified as Jayesh Sharma, while the absconding accused have been identified as Ravi Sharma and Tanishak Singh, all residents of Wagle Estate.
According to police, the dispute began when Ravi Sharma and the complainant got into an argument while playing cricket. During the scuffle, Ravi allegedly assaulted the complainant, who then rushed home and informed his elder brother Shivam (the deceased) about the incident. Shivam, along with his brother and mother, went to Ravi's residence to confront him. The situation escalated again, resulting in an altercation, which was briefly resolved by local intervention.
However, as the complainant, his brother, and mother were returning to their chawl, Ravi, Tanishak, and Jayesh confronted them again. A heated argument ensued, during which the trio allegedly attacked them. Tanishak reportedly took a sharp weapon and attacked both Shivam and the complainant. Shivam sustained serious injuries to his wrist, back, thumbs, and thighs, while the complainant suffered injuries to his hand.

After the attack, the trio fled the scene. Locals rushed to help and took the injured to a nearby hospital, where Shivam was declared dead during treatment. The complainant was treated and later discharged. A case has been registered by Shivam's brother under sections 103(1), 109, 3(5), 351(2), and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Shivaji Gaware, Senior Police Inspector of Wagale Estate Police Station, said, “Upon receiving the information, we alerted our team and apprehended Jayesh Sharma. Two teams have been formed to nab the remaining accused. Based on leads, search operations are underway in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. We have collected evidence from the crime scene.”
