Nagpur: A 43-year-old woman from Nagpur, Sunita Bholeshwar Jamgade, who recently crossed the Line of Control (LoC) in Kargil under mysterious circumstances, is being brought back to the city under police escort. Her return, however, may not lead directly to a family reunion as authorities are preparing to investigate her potential involvement in espionage activities and a formal arrest may follow.
Jamgade had gone missing from Hunderman village near the LoC in Ladakh’s Kargil region on May 14. She had left behind her 12-year-old son in a local hotel, sparking concern and an extensive search. Following her disappearance, the boy was placed under the care of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). He was later reunited with family in Nagpur.
Jamgade Handed Over To India After Flag Meeting At Attari-Wagah Border
After crossing the LoC, Jamgade was apprehended by Pakistani authorities. She was eventually repatriated and handed over to Indian officials during a flag meeting at the Attari-Wagah border on May 23.
Espionage Charges Likely Involved In FIR Against Jamgade
Upon return, a zero FIR was registered against her under the Official Secrets Act by the Amritsar Rural Police and later transferred to the Nagpur police for further investigation. According to a Times of India report, the case involves possible charges of espionage, as preliminary findings suggest she was in contact with at least two individuals in Pakistan and may have crossed the border to meet them.
A four-member Nagpur police team, including two women constables, has been escorting Jamgade back from Amritsar since Tuesday. Station House Officer Amandeep Singh from Gharinda police station confirmed the FIR and the circumstances of her surrender.
Jamgade Suffering From Mental Health Issues, Claims Family
Meanwhile, Jamgade’s family members have disclosed that she has a history of mental illness. A trained nurse who later took up garment sales, she had been undergoing treatment for psychological issues for several years. Her relatives had noticed signs of emotional instability and confusion in the days leading up to her disappearance, raising concerns about her mental state and the possibility that her border crossing was not entirely rational.
