Mumbai: In a case highlighting the alleged misuse of fresh and groundwater for maintaining cricket stadiums, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) to compile detailed data on the type and volume of water used for irrigating stadium grounds nationwide.

About The Directive

The directive comes in response to an application filed by environmental activist Haider Ali, who raised concerns about the use of fresh and groundwater for nonessential purposes like maintaining cricket grounds. The applicant emphasised that only treated water from sewage treatment plants (STPs) should be used for irrigation, to prevent the depletion of fresh water sources and promote sustainable practices.

According to the NGT’s latest order, stadiums across India have been instructed to submit detailed disclosures within four weeks. These reports must include monthly and annual data on the volume of water used, the proportion of STP-treated water versus fresh water and further bifurcation of fresh water sources.

The tribunal has also asked all stadiums to clarify whether, despite widespread water scarcity, they still intend to continue using fresh water for irrigating the grounds.
