India’s first Roll-On Roll-Off (Ro-Ro) train service for private cars, connecting Kolad in Maharashtra to Verna in Goa, is facing a sluggish response ahead of its scheduled launch on August 23.

Only One Booking Confirmed So Far

As per the Hindustan Times, despite being operationally ready, the Konkan Railway (KR) has received only one confirmed booking out of 38 inquiries since registrations opened a week ago. Officials stated that unless at least 16 vehicles are booked by August 13, the service will be cancelled and booking fees will be refunded.

The train, which can accommodate up to 40 cars, is designed to ease traffic during the busy Ganeshotsav season. However, it has failed to generate the expected enthusiasm.

Why the Response Is Low

According to KR officials, many travellers had assumed the train would stop at key stations like Ratnagiri and Sawantwadi. However, KR clarified there are no loading/unloading facilities at these stops, and the service is non-stop between Kolad and Verna.

Pricing and Logistics

Cost per car: ₹7,875

AC passenger fare: ₹935

Second-class fare: ₹190

Travel duration: Approx. 12 hours (3-hour early check-in required)

Passenger limit: Up to 3 per car

The Ro-Ro service will operate on alternate days until September 11, with return trips starting from Verna on August 24.

Rail Experts Raise Concerns

As per the Hindustan Times, several rail passenger associations have expressed concern that this trial service could strain resources and divert manpower from Ganpati special trains, which are in high demand during the festival.
