Navi Mumbai: Navi Mumbai is set to get its own art gallery soon, as Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has reportedly instructed the Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner to take necessary steps for its establishment. The move comes following an appeal made by renowned calligrapher Padma Shri Achyut Palav during a civic felicitation event held in Airoli.

The calligraher, speaking at the event, highlighted the long waiting periods faced by artists at Mumbai’s Jehangir Art Gallery and emphasized the need for a similar facility in Navi Mumbai. Responding positively, Shinde assured immediate action and directed officials to begin planning for a dedicated art space in the city.

The felicitation programme, organised by the Navi Mumbai branch of the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Parishad, took place at the Euro School auditorium in Sector 19, Airoli. Hosted by the executive committee member Vijay Chougule, the event honoured veteran actor Ashok Saraf and Achyut Palav, both recipients of the prestigious Padma Shri award.

Actor Prashant Damle also raised concerns over housing for backstage artists. Acknowledging the issue, the Deputy CM assured that the government would address their needs and provide support.

Chougule further brought to light the prolonged delay in completing the Airoli theatre, pointing out that nearly seven years have passed since its inauguration. Taking note, Shinde directed the Municipal Commissioner to expedite the pending work and ensure early completion.

The announcements have sparked optimism among the city’s art and theatre community, who have long awaited such infrastructure to support and showcase local talent.
