Navi Mumbai: With Ganeshotsav beginning on August 27 and Navratri following from September 22, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has begun preparations to ensure both festivals are celebrated in an environmentally responsible and well-regulated manner.
High-Level Coordination Meeting Held at NMMC HQ
A high-level coordination meeting was held at the NMMC headquarters last week, bringing together officials from the police, traffic department, fire services, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL), and representatives of 63 Ganesh and Navratri Mandals.
Mandals Advised to Use Clay Idols, Avoid Plastic and POP
During the meeting, NMMC officials appealed to citizens and mandals to adopt sustainable practices such as avoiding plastic and thermocol in decorations and choosing natural clay idols over those made with Plaster of Paris. Emphasis was also placed on maintaining sound levels to minimize disruption to students, senior citizens, and local communities.
Online NOC Applications Mandatory for All Mandals
Mandals that received permission in previous years must still secure fresh No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from relevant departments. All mandals are required to apply through the corporation’s official online portal.
MPCB Cites HC Ruling on POP Idol Immersions
MPCB officials highlighted a recent High Court directive mandating the immersion of POP idols under five feet only in artificial ponds. The board will issue further advisories and collaborate with NMMC for awareness drives on pollution-free celebrations.
raffic, Power and Waste Guidelines Reinforced
MSEDCL requested mandals to avoid tapping power illegally from electric poles and instead apply for official temporary connections. Traffic officials instructed that mandaps or arches must not obstruct roads or cause congestion. Any unauthorized structures will face immediate removal, and heavy vehicle movement will be restricted during key festival days.

Civic officials also urged mandals to avoid sensitive or inflammatory themes in their decorations and reduce advertising clutter. Waste management teams reiterated that floral offerings and other ritual waste (nirmalya) must be deposited in designated bins provided by the corporation.
The municipal body aims to make Ganeshotsav 2025 a model for eco-friendly celebration through collective civic responsibility and seamless coordination among departments and local mandals.
