Panvel: In a major push to promote eco-friendly celebrations during the IPC Ganeshotsav 2025, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has significantly increased the distribution of natural clay (Shadu mati) to local idol makers from 12 tons given last year to 34 tons this year.
PMC Urges Artisans to Avoid POP and Chemicals
The initiative is aimed at encouraging the crafting of eco-friendly Ganesh idols. "This year’s sharp increase in clay distribution reflects a growing demand from artisans and a rising awareness among citizens for environmentally responsible festivities," said an official.
On July 26, the PMC distributed 34 tons of clay free of cost to over 24 idol makers at Kumbharwada, Panvel.
Administration also undertook site visit of nearby idol workshops and interacted with artisans. During the visit, artisans were urged to avoid using Plaster of Paris (POP), chemical paints, and plastic, and instead focus on making idols using natural materials.

PMC has also announced plans to allocate spaces for the sale of eco-friendly idols, based on availability and a first-come, first-served basis. Officials emphasized that such initiatives are key to increasing both artisan participation and citizen involvement in sustainable celebrations.
Deputy Commissioner Kharge Backs Sustainability Push
Deputy Commissioner Kharge expressed confidence that the increased distribution of clay would result in a higher number of eco-friendly idols being installed across the city. “The response from local artists shows a strong commitment to preserving the environment, and we are proud to support that,” he said.

The event was attended by Environment Department Head Manoj Chavan, Clerk Pravin Vhalgal, and leading idol makers including Anant Chirnerkar, Naresh Kumbhar, Gajanan Wajekar, and Rahul Ghonghe.
