Palghar: In a powerful blend of medical advancement and social consciousness, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road has emerged as a frontrunner in both clinical excellence and public engagement. The hospital recently wrapped up a month-long organ donation awareness campaign that united spiritual leaders, medical experts, and the public across the Mira-Bhayandar, Thane, and Palghar districts. The initiative culminates just ahead of World Organ Donation Day, observed annually on August 13.

Centrally themed ‘Your Final Act Can Be Your Greatest One!’, the awareness campaign sought to normalise organ donation by bridging medical science with spiritual philosophy. Representatives from Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist communities joined hands with transplant surgeons, donor families, and recipients in an effort to dispel myths and build public trust around the cause.

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, Wockhardt Hospitals collaborated with the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), the Medical Council of India, and local faith leaders to spread a unified message: organ donation is not only scientifically sound, but also spiritually endorsed.

“Organ donation is the highest form of service to humanity,” said Sangeetha Desai, Administrative Officer and Transplant Coordinator, ZTCC Mumbai. “We are working to improve deceased organ donation rates so more patients with end-stage organ failure can get a second chance. But for this mission to succeed, we need greater public awareness, stronger family consent, and trust in the process.”

A major announcement came alongside the campaign: Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road has now been officially certified to perform liver transplants, making it the first and only liver transplant centre between Andheri and Surat. This milestone brings advanced liver care closer to patients in the western suburbs of Mumbai, the extended Mumbai Metropolitan Region, and South Gujarat.

Dr. Swapnil Sharma's Statement

Dr. Swapnil Sharma, Consultant for Liver Transplant, HPB & GI Surgery at the hospital, said, “Every year, India loses thousands of lives simply because donor organs aren’t available. Our ICUs are ready, our surgical teams are trained, but what’s missing is conversation. We urge families to talk about organ donation now, so decisions made later come from a place of clarity, not confusion.”

Dr. Puneet Bhuwania's Statement

Echoing the sentiment, Dr. Puneet Bhuwania, Consultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician, added, “One donor can save up to eight lives. Awareness is growing, but action is still lacking. Families should treat organ donation discussions like any other life decision. When the intent is clear, saying ‘yes’ becomes easier.”

The campaign’s impact was not just emotional—it was measurable. Dr. Sushil Kumar, Centre Head at Wockhardt Hospitals, noted a visible rise in both online and offline donor registrations and increased digital engagement throughout the campaign period. “Beyond numbers, what matters is the cultural shift we’ve helped initiate. By combining clinical knowledge with spiritual wisdom, we’ve made the conversation about organ donation more accessible and compassionate,” he said.
