Mumbai: Mumbai witnessed heavy rain on Thursday, due to overnight rainfall in majority of the areas in the city and the suburbs. An alert has been issued by the weather department warning intense showers for next 24 hours.
The continuous rainfall resulted in slowing traffic on several key routes and raising concerns over possible waterlogging in low-lying areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has maintained a yellow alert for the city until August 17, warning of further showers in the coming days.
Overnight rainfall may lead to water accumulation in certain pockets of the city, particularly in Sion, Matunga, Wadala, Vakola, Andheri and Dahisar. While Wednesday morning saw no major reports of flooding or traffic snarls, the IMD cautioned that continuous downpours during peak office hours could disrupt daily life.
Local train services across Mumbai’s suburban network are running smoothly for now, but civic officials remain on alert for potential disruptions. The weather bureau’s forecast suggests that while August has recorded less rain compared to June and July, the monsoon is far from retreating. Meteorologists expect a revival of rainfall activity in September, which could further impact the city.
Yellow Alert For MMR & Konkan Region
The yellow alert covers Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and six districts along the Konkan coast, including Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. These regions are likely to receive moderate to heavy showers, with occasional intense spells. In Thane and Navi Mumbai, cloud cover will persist throughout the day, with isolated heavy rain expected. Maximum temperatures are forecast at around 30°C, while the minimum may hover near 25°C.
In Palghar district, the IMD has predicted steady rainfall, prompting another yellow alert. Temperatures here are likely to remain between 24°C and 29°C. Similar conditions are expected in the Konkan belt, where the rain intensity could cause waterlogging in some areas. Maximum temperatures in Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg may range from 28°C to 30°C, with minimums between 24°C and 25°C.
The IMD has urged residents to exercise caution when stepping out, especially in flood-prone zones. Motorists have been advised to avoid low-lying routes during heavy showers. Civic authorities are keeping pumps and emergency response teams ready to tackle any waterlogging or infrastructure issues.
