Mumbai: The BMC will resume its road concretisation works from October 1 and this time the citizens will be informed in advance on the roads that will be undertaken for concretisation.
"On August 15, we will publish the road works list on BMC website. At first, we will resume concretisation of roads which were left halfway (completed junction to junction for traffic movement). And gradually, work on new roads will begin. The deadline to complete all entire road concretisation project in end of 2027," Girish Nikam, Chief Engineer of Roads & Traffic department of the BMC.
49% of BMC’s road concretisation completed so far
The BMC had halted it's road concretisation works on May 31 and is set to resume post monsoon. So far, the civic body has completed 49% of the total road concretisation, the humangous project undertaken in July 2022 on the instructions on then Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, aiming to make all city roads potholes-free. A total of 2,121 road works have been planned across Phase 1 and Phase 2, covering a combined length of 698.44 kms.
As of May 31, work on 1,385 roads totaling 342.74 kms has been completed, of which 771 roads spanning 186 kms have been completed end-to-end. While work on 614 roads covering 156.74 kms has been completed either from junction to junction or up to half the road width. From October 1, the work on these 614 roads will resume. The remaining 736 roads which are untouched, will be undertaken after after this.
Do not demolished existing well maintained sidewalks: BMC chief
In a meeting held on Wednesday, the BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani gave instructions to all senior BMC officials to prioritise immediate redressal of citizens complaints and ensure citizens know the status of their complaints registered with the BMC.
He also directed for surprise spot visits, after several complaints of parking spots on commercial streets used for other purposes than parking and removal of unused/scrap vehicles creating hurdles on the roads.
The other instructions included:
- Informing citizens in advance on Aug 15, regarding roads concreting to be carried out from Oct 1.
- Roads should not be dug up again for any reason after road works are completed. The concerned authorities should not give permission for digging up roads.
- Existing and well-maintained sidewalks should not be demolished.
- Appropriate measures to be taken on new flooding spots in the city due to infrastructural works
- Eviction of dangerous building as per HC order
- More effective surveillance on ward level for services like sanitation, health, education etc.
