Mumbai: Despite being one of Mumbai’s major infrastructure efforts, the road concretisation project has fallen short . As of May 31, only 49.07% of the planned work is complete, while half the roads are still unfinished.

On July 23, 2022, then-Chief Minister Eknath Shinde directed the BMC to concretise all roads in Mumbai within two years, aiming to make the city’s roads pothole-free. Under the ambitious road concretisation project, a total of 2,121 road works have been planned across Phase 1 and Phase 2, covering a combined length of 698.44 kms.

As of the deadline on May 31, work on 1,385 roads totaling 342.74 kms has been completed. Of these, 771 roads spanning 186 kms have been completed end-to-end, while work on 614 roads covering 156.74 kms has been completed either from junction to junction or up to half the road width. "All completed roads have been opened to traffic," a senior official confirmed.

He stated, "The ongoing road concretisation project is on schedule and will be completed by May 2027. Phase One, which began in February 2023, is expected to finish by December 2025, while Phase Two, starting from September 2024, is slated for completion by May 2027. Officials in the road department have been instructed to carry out regular surprise site visits, with IIT experts providing guidance. Excavation on concretised roads is strictly prohibited, with no permits granted for such activities. All barricades and construction materials have been cleared, roads reopened fully, and adjacent stormwater drains cleaned. Reconstruction of official speed breakers will commence soon after relevant lists are received," said a civic official.

Phase 1 - concretisation for 700 roads (320.08 km), completing 582 roads (203.36 km) — 343 roads (101.67 km) fully end-to-end and 239 roads (101.68 km) partially. 63.53% progress.

Phase 2 - concretisation for 1,421 roads (378.36 km), completing 803 roads (139.38 km) — 428 roads (84.33 km) fully end-to-end and 375 roads (55.06 km) partially. Progress stands at 36.84%.
