Mumbai: The BMC will submit its draft on demarcation of 227 electoral wards to the state urban development department (UDD) on Tuesday, August 5. As per the schedule by the state government, all civic commissioners in Maharashtra were scheduled to submit the draft in between August 1 - 5.
Ward Boundaries in Mumbai Remain Unchanged for 2025 Elections
"After the ground visits, we have prepared the maps and marked the boundaries of 227 electoral wards. The boundaries in Mumbai remain unchanged for the upcoming civic elections," said a senior BMC officer.
The officer added that it was expected that ward boundaries to change slightly due to infrastructural developments like new bridges, roads, metro lines etc, however, it was observed that the new works are not affecting ward limits and citizens accessibility for to the booths for voting too. Thus, it was decided to keep the same ward markings as 2017 civic elections.
Infrastructural Projects Like Coastal Road, Atal Setu Included
The officer stated that new roads like Coastal Road and Atal Setu are included in the new marking. Coastal Road falls into D and G-South ward, and part of Atal Setu in Mumbai justification falls in E ward. "These projects do not have human settlement. Thus, changing markings will not make difference."
Changes Expected in Pune, Thane, Mira Bhayandar
"Although electoral ward boundaries for Mumbai remain unchanged, there are several changes in Pune and some are expected in Thane and Mira Bhayandar," the officer added.
Delimitation to Follow Nine-Step Process Ending in October
For the first time, the UDD has been included in ward delimitation process for the local bodies elections in the state. This step by the state government is said to favour the parties in power. After completing the nine step process, including calling for suggestions and objections from the citizens, and final ward delimitation submission to the state election commission, the ward boundaries will be notified by the respective local bodies on Oct 3-6.
