The BMC administration has completed marking of 227 electoral ward boundaries in Mumbai. This is the first step out of total nine for finalisation the ward demarcation for the upcoming BMC elections, which are likely to be held in November. The draft ward boundaries will be submitted to the state urban development department (UDD) on Monday or Tuesday.

As per the schedule, the BMC commissioner has to send the draft of ward boundaries to the UDD before August 5. After that, the draft is scheduled to be published inviting suggestions and objections from citizens in between August 22-28. The resubmission of the final draft to the UDD has been set for September 9-15. The submission of the proposal to the State Election Commission must finish by September 16-22. The issuance of the notification of final ward boundaries will be done by October 3- 6.

Ward Count Set at 227, Minor Boundary Changes Expected

The FPJ had reported earlier that although the total number of electoral wards will remain 227, it is likely that the ward boundaries will slightly change due to new roads, stormwater drains, and other infrastructural development since 2017. BMC commissioner and administrator Bhushan Gagrani had told the FPJ, “Minor changes in the ward boundaries cannot be ruled out.”

The BMC has been running under the administrative rule since 2022 after the five year term of corporators ended. The last election was held in February 2017.
