Mumbai: The Gamdevi Police have arrested a Mercedes driver identified as Kamlesh Jha (39) for allegedly running over a man sleeping on the footpath near Chowpatty, leading to his death.
Incident Occurred While Driver Was Parking Mercedes
The incident occurred on the evening of July 31, when the driver was attempting to park the vehicle but fled the scene without informing authorities or offering medical assistance to the victim.
Victim Was Long-Time Aide to BMC Sanitation Worker
The deceased, identified as Jagdish (45) alias "Jaggu", was known to the complainant, Parvati Arjun Kaliyan (39), a BMC sanitation worker, for over 25 years. Jagdish often assisted her with her cleaning duties in the D-Ward of the BMC.
Victim Declared Dead at Nair Hospital
According to the FIR filed by Kaliyan, she was informed by her BMC supervisor Sanjay Gohil at around 7 AM on August 1 that Jagdish had been found unresponsive outside the Babulnath BMC chowky near Oriental Club, where he had been sleeping after consuming alcohol. Upon reaching the spot, she found police officials already present, who had transported Jagdish to Nair Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Driver Fled Scene After Allegedly Hitting Man
Kaliyan later learned from a security guard, Umakant Chaudhary, that around 7 PM on July 31, a white Mercedes car (MH01EU7447) driven by Kamlesh hit Jagdish on his right chest while he was sleeping near the rear gate of Oriental Club. The driver allegedly drove recklessly and fled the scene without checking on the victim or reporting the incident.
Police Rely on CCTV, Arrest Kamlesh Jha
Police examined CCTV footage and confirmed the sequence of events. Following this, Kamlesh was arrested under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to causing death by negligence and failure to render aid. He was produced in court and granted bail. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
