The Mahakumbh began on 13th January 2025, attracting saints, sadhus, and devotees from across India and beyond. Held at the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati, this Mahakumbh is particularly significant as it returns to Prayagraj after 144 years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to participate in this grand event, with preparations in full swing for his visit. PM Modi has chosen 5th February for his sacred snan (bath), a date that holds deep spiritual importance.
While other days like Basant Panchami and Mauni Amavasya are traditionally considered auspicious, 5th February was selected for its unique significance. This date coincides with Magh Ashtami, a spiritually fulfilling day for penance, devotion, and charity.
All about Magh Ashtami
According to the Panchang, Magh Ashtami falls on the eighth day of the sacred Magh month during the Gupt Navratri period. The scriptures emphasise that engaging in meditation, charity, and a holy bath at Sangam on this day is believed to fulfill all desires.
Magh Ashtami is also regarded as an ideal day for spiritual growth. It is said that acts of devotion performed on this day bring immense blessings and peace to the soul.
Bhishma Ashtami and its significance
Interestingly, 5th February is also celebrated as Bhishma Ashtami, a day tied to an important event in the Mahabharata. Bhishma Pitamah, while lying on his bed of arrows, awaited the Sun's transition into Uttarayan and Shukla Paksha before relinquishing his mortal life.
In the presence of Lord Krishna, Bhishma attained moksha (liberation) on the eighth day of the Magh month. This day is commemorated to honor his spiritual journey and dedication.
Rituals followed on this day
The scriptures highlight the importance of performing rituals on Magh Ashtami. Bathing in holy rivers, offering Pitru Tarpan, and honoring ancestors with sesame seeds, rice, and flowers are considered auspicious.
These rituals are believed to grant peace and liberation to one’s ancestors while bringing blessings of moksha to those performing the acts. The day holds a deep sense of spiritual fulfillment for all who observe it.
As devotees gather for Mahakumbh 2025, the significance of 5th February shines brightly. From Magh Ashtami’s promise of spiritual growth to the importance of Bhishma Ashtami, this day resonates with deep religious and cultural meaning.
The participation of PM Modi on this special occasion adds to the grandeur of the event, making it a historic moment for devotees worldwide.
