In a significant development in the ongoing debate around the relocation of elephant Madhuri, Gujarat-based wildlife rescue center Vantara has extended full support to the Maharashtra government’s plan to seek her return to Kolhapur. The 36-year-old elephant, revered locally as "Mahadevi", had recently been moved to Jamnagar following a Bombay High Court directive.
Madhuri was shifted last month from Nandani Math in Kolhapur to Vantara’s state-of-the-art animal care facility in Jamnagar. The transfer was based on a Bombay High Court order following a petition by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), citing alleged mistreatment and poor conditions. The move was later upheld by the Supreme Court.
However, the decision was met with widespread protests and emotional appeals from Kolhapur residents, where Madhuri has long been regarded as sacred. Local religious leaders and devotees have since rallied for her return.
Maharashtra Government to Reapproach the Supreme Court
In response to public sentiment, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Tuesday that the state will request a Supreme Court review, aiming to bring Madhuri back to her original home. The state government, along with the Jain Math in Kolhapur, is preparing to file an application urging the apex court to reconsider its earlier ruling.
Vantara Expresses Willingness to Facilitate Safe Return
Acknowledging the deep cultural and emotional connection Kolhapur has with Madhuri, Vantara has issued an official statement confirming its readiness to assist in the process, provided the court grants permission.
“Vantara will extend full support to any application filed by the Jain Math and the Government of Maharashtra before the Hon’ble Court requesting Madhuri’s return to Kolhapur,” the rescue center said. “If permitted, we will provide complete veterinary and technical support to ensure a safe and dignified relocation.”
Inside Vantara: Madhuri’s Current Home
Vantara, led by Anant Ambani, is among the world’s largest animal rescue and rehabilitation centers. Located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, the facility spans thousands of acres and houses over 1.5 lakh animals from more than 2,000 species. Madhuri is currently under expert care at the center, receiving medical attention for health issues allegedly caused by prolonged neglect.
The center claims she was subjected to abuse and inadequate conditions at her previous location. Since her arrival at Vantara, she has been undergoing structured rehabilitation, including advanced veterinary treatments.
A Long-Term Vision: Satellite Rehab Centre Proposed in Kolhapur
As a long-term resolution, Vantara has proposed establishing a satellite rehabilitation center in Kolhapur itself. The new facility would offer Madhuri continued medical care and freedom in a more familiar cultural and ecological environment.
1. A hydrotherapy pond and swimming zone for muscle recovery and enrichment
2. Laser therapy rooms and rehabilitation units for chronic pain management
3. Spacious night shelters and open chain-free grounds for unrestricted movement
4. A sand pit to support natural behaviours like dust bathing and play
5. A fully equipped veterinary clinic for 24/7 animal care
6. Special rubber flooring and sand mounds for relief from joint stress and foot rot
According to Vantara, the land for the new facility will be selected in consultation with Kolhapur’s religious leadership and the state government. The center has expressed its readiness to begin development as soon as required approvals are obtained.
