Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is gearing up to expand his legendary home, Mannat, by adding two additional floors. Known for its stunning blend of neo-classical and modern architecture, the sea-facing mansion is a landmark in Mumbai. However, before it became the actor’s dream home, the property had an intriguing history with multiple owners and a different name—Villa Vienna.

Built in the late 1800s, the mansion was originally owned by Raja Bijai Sen of Mandi, who had it constructed as a tribute to one of his consorts. After his passing, the property was sold in 1915 to Perin Maneckji Batliwala, a resident of Girgaum. Perin, an ardent admirer of Viennese music, renamed the mansion Villa Vienna as a nod to his passion.

A tale of multiple owners

Following Perin’s ownership, the house was passed down to his sister, Khurshedbai Sanjana, and her husband. As the couple had no children, they later transferred the property to Khurshedbai’s sister, Goolbanu. Eventually, Goolbanu handed it over to her son, Nariman Dubash, who later decided to sell the mansion to a real estate builder. It was then acquired by film producer Bharat Shah, making him one of the final owners before Shah Rukh Khan came into the picture.

How Shah Rukh Khan acquired Mannat

Interestingly, Shah Rukh Khan originally wanted to buy a flat in Mumbai, but everything changed when he set his eyes on Villa Vienna. Though the price was beyond his reach at the time, he worked tirelessly to make the purchase happen. In 2001, he finally bought the mansion for a reported ₹13 crore. The property, however, required extensive repairs due to its deteriorating condition.

After acquiring the house, Shah Rukh initially named it "Jannat", meaning "paradise." However, as his career flourished and he experienced immense success, he renamed it "Mannat", which translates to "wish" or "prayer." His wife, Gauri Khan, played a major role in designing the mansion’s luxurious interiors, transforming it into the iconic home it is today.

Mannat: A Bollywood landmark

Over the years, Mannat has become more than just a home—it's a cultural landmark that has appeared in movies, documentaries, and countless fan moments. Fans from around the world visit the house daily, hoping to catch a glimpse of the superstar. Today, the estimated value of Mannat stands at a staggering ₹250 crore, making it one of the most prized celebrity homes in India.

With new renovations on the way, Mannat is set to become even more grand and iconic, further solidifying its place in Bollywood history.
