Mandsaur (Madhya Pradesh): Mandsaur district's Panchayat and Rural Development Department targets to recharge 4,800 wells with rainwater through the MNREGA scheme, supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's public campaign to conserve nature, environment and water resources. Work has already begun on more than 2,500 wells, with farmers showing strong interest in creating well recharge pits.

These recharge pits are constructed using the Dugwell recharge method, where special structures with layers of stone and thick sand are built 3 to 6 metres away from each well.

The process involves digging pits 3 metres long, 3 metres wide and 8 metres deep. An 8-inch pipe connects the pit to the well, with a 1-foot pipe installed at the bottom using an elbow joint, allowing captured rainwater to flow into the well.

This initiative will significantly increase groundwater levels, providing farmers with sufficient water for both irrigation and drinking purposes, while reducing the risk of wells drying up during summer months.

The Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan, which began on March 30 and will continue until June 30, focuses on saving rainwater and renovating existing water sources.

During this three-month campaign, the Panchayat and Rural Development Department will implement various projects across all districts, including farm ponds, check dams, Amrit Sarovar and well recharge pits to conserve rainwater and revitalise traditional water sources.
