Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The district administration has fined the Agriculture College Rs 2,500 for stubbe burning on its campus, violating environmental regulations intended to curb air pollution.

District magistrate Asheesh Singh confirmed the penalty and said a formal letter will be sent to the college management demanding action against those responsible.

“Stubble burning is wrong. We have imposed a fine under government rules,” Singh told reporters, reiterating that strict action is being taken across the district to discourage the harmful practice. Authorities said stubble burning, especially after the wheat harvest, is contributing to deteriorating air quality in Indore — India’s cleanest city under the Swachh Bharat rankings.

The administration has launched a crackdown on violators, including both educational institutions and farmers. Singh added that FIRs are being registered against farmers found burning stubble in fields, in addition to monetary fines.

Environmental concerns are rising as stubble burning leads to harmful emissions and undermines the city's cleanliness achievements. Officials emphasised the need for responsible behaviour from all sectors, especially educational institutions, in setting the right example for sustainable agricultural practices.

The incident has sparked conversations around stricter monitoring and long-term solutions for post-harvest residue management.
