A violent confrontation erupted at Amar Shaheed Umanath Singh District Hospital in Jaunpur on Friday night when approximately 20-25 transgender individuals stormed the emergency ward, leading to chaos and injuries.
The incident occurred at 8:45 PM when the group allegedly assaulted Dr Pawan Singh, chasing and beating him. Nursing officers, pharmacists, and ward attendants who tried to intervene were also attacked. Four people sustained serious injuries in the 45-minute rampage that spread fear throughout the hospital premises.
According to eyewitnesses, the transgender individuals created a disturbance by removing their clothes inside the ward and even climbed onto surgical tables during the altercation. Hospital administration and two security guards remained passive spectators during the entire incident, while patients, caregivers, and doctors panicked. Videos of clash have gone viral on social media triggering outrage.
The violence stemmed from allegations that medical staff refused to treat an injured transgender person earlier that evening. The victim claimed she was assaulted and when she arrived at the hospital for treatment, doctors allegedly turned her away without medical attention. She then approached her community leader Akshita, who mobilized other community members to confront the hospital staff.
Transgender leader Akshita accused doctors of refusing treatment and using abusive language. However, hospital staff maintained they had asked for an FIR to be filed first regarding the assault case, which led to the argument escalating into violence.
Police arrived after most perpetrators had fled. Station House Officer Mithilesh confirmed that cases under attempt to murder charges have been registered against unknown transgender individuals. CCTV footage is being reviewed for identification and arrests.
District Magistrate Dr Dinesh Chandra has ordered an impartial investigation into both the hospital incident and the original assault on the transgender person.
