Lucknow: In a move to integrate environmental consciousness with public health outreach, newborns in Uttar Pradesh delivered between July 1 and July 7, 2025, will receive a sapling and a 'Green Gold Certificate'. The distribution will take place in district hospitals, Community Health Centres (CHCs), Primary Health Centres (PHCs), and other government run healthcare institutions.

The initiative will be carried out by the Forest Department in coordination with the Health Department. Officials hope the gesture will encourage families to plant and care for trees as part of a long-term commitment to sustainability.

The effort is tied to a broader plantation campaign scheduled to run throughout the year, with an ambitious target of planting 35 crore saplings. The Lucknow division has been given the highest plantation quota. Special focus areas include the conservation of Triveni forests and the development of themed 'Van Vatikas' named after notable personalities. Most of the saplings distributed will be of native and long-living species like Teak (Sagwan) and Sheesham, chosen for their durability and ecological value.

According to Sunil Chaudhary, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, the sapling initiative represents more than symbolism. “Gifting a tree to a newborn links the beginning of a new life with the beginning of a greener future,” he said. “It’s a way to create a personal and lasting connection between citizens and the environment.”

Divisional forest officers have been instructed to coordinate with medical staff to ensure smooth delivery of saplings and certificates. Parents will also be encouraged to plant the saplings near their homes and take responsibility for their upkeep. The 'Green Gold Certificate' is intended to serve as a lifelong token of the child's bond with nature and a reminder of shared environmental responsibility.
