Punjab: In a shocking incident late Thursday night, Harjit Kaur, the mother of Punjab-based gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and a former village sarpanch, succumbed to gunshot injuries after being targeted by unidentified assailants in Batala. The attack also claimed the life of her driver, Karanvir Singh, who was declared dead on arrival at the Batala Civil Hospital.
CCTV Captures Exact Moments Of Shooting
CCTV visuals of the shooting incident have since surfaced on the internet showing two motorcycle-borne assailants who opened fire at close range on a white Scorpio SUV outside a bakery on Kadian Road around 10:45 pm. Harjit Kaur, originally from Bhagwanpur village and currently residing in Urban Estate, was reportedly seated in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.
Kaur sustained critical injuries and was immediately shifted to a hospital in Amritsar for advanced treatment. However, she could not survive and died during the course of treatment. Dr Sukharaj Singh from the Batala Civil Hospital confirmed the death of Karanvir Singh, a resident of Bhikhowal village, citing multiple bullet wounds as the cause.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Parmveer Singh said, “We received the call about the firing around 10:45 pm and rushed to the spot. Senior officials also arrived, and an investigation is underway,” as quoted by the Indian Express. Police teams have since set up checkpoints and launched a manhunt for the attackers. While the motive behind the killing is still unclear, officials are not ruling out gang rivalry or a targeted hit linked to Bhagwanpuria’s criminal background.

Harjit Kaur was known to be active in local politics and had served as an elected member of the village panchayat in Bhagwanpur. Over the years, she had attracted controversy, including allegations of attempting to influence voters and repeatedly petitioning courts for security provisions for her incarcerated son. In 2022, she made headlines for demanding that Bhagwanpuria be provided with a bulletproof vest in prison.
