Puducherry: A disturbing case of animal cruelty emerged from Karaikal where a stray dog was run over by a goods vehicle and then again by a car, before being mercilessly driven away with stones as it limped away in pain. The incident occurred near the Karaikal bus stand and was captured on CCTV footage, which has since gone viral on social media.

The footage, shared by PTTV Online News, shows the dog attempting to cross the road when a heavy goods vehicle ploughs over it. Moments later, as the injured animal struggles to stand, a white car hits it again. Severely hurt and confused, the dog is seen limping and chasing after a scooter ridden by a woman, reported to be a nurse, grabbing onto her leg in what appears to be an act of biting.

Instead of receiving any compassion, the dog was reportedly pelted with stones by bystanders, forcing it to flee with visible injuries. No police complaint has been filed in the matter.

Reacting to the incident, an X user wrote, "You filthy guys, isn't it wrong to hit a dog with two vehicles and leave? I pray to God that your own child doesn't get hit and die like this." Another comment noted, "The van didn’t slow down at all… I’m not a dog enthusiast, but the case here is against that van driver."

Tamil Nadu Allows Euthanasia of Terminally Ill Strays Under New Policy

Amid ongoing concerns over stray dog-related infections, the Tamil Nadu government has reportedly approved euthanasia for terminally ill stray dogs under the 2024 Dog Breeding Policy. While no confirmation was found on the Animal Husbandry Department's official portal, multiple reports cite an official order mandating that euthanasia be performed only by registered veterinary professionals and that all related procedures, including burial and documentation, be strictly followed.

The Dog Breeding Policy, notified earlier this year, strictly prohibits euthanising strays for non-commercial viability. Only mortally wounded or incurably ill animals may be put down, and even then, under regulated, humane conditions. The policy comes amid concerns over the booming commercial dog trade in Tamil Nadu, which has turned into a multi-crore industry.

Despite policy assurances, incidents like the one in Karaikal raise serious questions about on-ground compassion, enforcement, and the collective apathy towards street animals.
