Guwahati: Two person identified as Burhan Uddin and Faizur Rahman of Patharkandi in Shreebhumi district in Barak Valley were arrested after police uncovered the identity fraudulent and cross border infiltration scheme during a verification process linked to a passport application filed earlier this month.
The passport application had been submitted in the name of one Farooq Ahmed. However, upon verification, law enforcement found discrepancies in the submitted documents, which included a birth certificate, Aadhaar card, and PAN card. Further investigation revealed that all documents had been fraudulently generated in the name of Farooq Ahmed, who had passed away some time ago.
The forged documents were allegedly used to falsely project a Bangladeshi citizen as an Indian national in order to obtain a passport.
Following the revelation, police arrested both accused from Patharkandi and seized a number of forged documents along with a computer used in the document creation process.
The duo has been produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court, and a wider investigation is now underway. Authorities are probing whether any government officials or employees were involved in facilitating the forgery.
Police sources stated that investigations are ongoing to determine how many individuals including foreign nationals may have been similarly granted Indian identity using falsified documentation.
