Panaji: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has elevated the rain warning for Goa from orange to red for the next 24 hours. As per IMD, “a few areas are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rain, with extremely heavy rainfall in isolated spots, along with thunderstorms and wind speeds of 50-60 km, gusting to 70 kmph, likely at several locations across North and South Goa in the next 24 hours.”
Normal life was disrupted for the second straight day in Goa due to intense rainfall. As per IMD, there will be a break from rain after a couple of days. An orange alert has been announced for the upcoming two days, while a yellow alert has been issued for the next four days.
A breadfruit tree collapsed onto a house in Wade, Junawada, during heavy rainfall, causing significant damage worth thousands of rupees. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Local residents came to aid the family and clear debris. This incident underscores the dangers posed by aging or overgrown trees during the monsoon. Authorities have been urged to inspect and take preventive measures concerning vulnerable trees in residential areas to avoid future occurrences.
Due to the recent intense rainfall, the Calangute Panchayat has commenced extensive drainage cleaning efforts to avert waterlogging and maintain public safety. The Panchayat has requested that residents assist the workers and refrain from parking close to drainage lines to aid the cleaning efforts.
